Materials From Around the Home (click for more)

What if you’re at home and find that you don’t have all the materials you need to bring your ideas to life? This post is about some different things you can use from around your home. I invite you to challenge yourself to recycle and reuse materials, or use materials you might never have considered using to make your art. Explore, experiment, and have fun!

From Seed to Spoon (click for more)

From Seed to Spoon is a great app that has a ton of information on plants and how to take care of them. You can look up whatever plant you want to grow, or are already growing, and find information on plant care, pests, and even recipes for your plant!

I found that this was a great resource for all the information I needed. This app can help you with your first zine assignment, and also help you take care of your plant as you work on your second zine. Take a look at the video by the team of From Seed to Spoon below on the features of the app and how to use it!

Artist Feature: Gu Xiong (click for more)

Back in March, I introduced to you all an artist named Gu Xiong (watch the video for a refresher – it’s a really awesome video by CBC Arts). We mainly went over his inspirations, past, and his work The Yellow Pear . What I didn’t share with you was work that he had made in recent years, which is actually closely related to your project!

One of the goals of this project is to highlight the important of food production and distribution. With COVID-19, there have been many impacts on the agriculture industry, specifically with farms. Migrant workers, individuals who move to another country for temporary work, are essential individuals in getting food to our tables. As important as they are, the contributions of migrant workers are often not acknowledged or recognized.

Gu Xiong created an art piece revolving around this very issue. He travelled across Canada to interview migrant workers to listen to their stories and experiences. From these interviews, he created an artwork titled Invisible in the Light V (2014) that strives to acknowledge all the migrant workers who play a role in producing the foods that we eat.

Please go to the full blog post for more information on Gu’s work and on the impacts of COVID-19 on food production.

Map Your World Assignment

Because of COVID-19, life has changed a lot for all of us! With not going to school and not being able to hang out with your friends, many of your daily routines are very different from before quarantine.

For this project, we would like to see how your life has changed through the form of a map! Draw a map of your current life under self-isolation using whatever materials you have.

This project was started by a site called CityLab and they have been asking for people to submit their handmade maps. So far, they have received many maps so you can find a lot of examples on their website here.

The Tyee, a Canadian news magazine mainly covering B.C., has also shared the invitation to make maps. You can see their examples at this link here.

By drawing this map, you can share how you have adjusted to this new way of life. You will also be able to see the different maps of your classmates, giving you many different perspectives. As a bonus, when quarantine is over and your routines go back to normal, you will have a map to remind you of how life was like during this very different time!

Due on May 25th
